What are the best citizenship by investment programmes in 2022?

Want to know more about the best citizenship by investment programmes to look out for in 2022? Let’s dive into the top 5 programmes, to help you evaluate which programme is right for you.

Dominica

One of the cheapest CBI programmes

Dominica is a great option for single applicants looking to get a second citizenship. The process is quick and efficient, taking only 3 months to gain citizenship from the country.

Prices start at $100,000.

Antigua & Barbuda

The best option for families

Although some Caribbean options seem cheaper on the surface, their fees for additional applicants are considerably higher. Therefore, Antigua & Barbuda remains the best and cheapest option for families to get second citizenship.

For an individual with 3 applicants, (i.e. a family of 4), the cheapest option would be for the main applicant to pay a $140,000 one time donation and add any additional family members onto the application. It is worth bearing in mind that this government donation, like that of St. Lucia and Dominica, is non-refundable. As such this money would not be returned after a 5 year holding period, as is the case when investing in government bonds.

Vanuatu

The quickest CBI programme

Vanuatu is currently the quickest option in the world to obtain a second passport, with the whole process taking less than 2 months. Prices start from $130,000 for individual applicants, the programme is smooth and straightforward, with no physical stay requirements,  and allows free access to 130 countries.

Named as one of the happiest countries in the world, Vanuatu would make an idyllic vacation and retirement destination.

St Kitts and Nevis

The oldest and most popular

As well as being the oldest CBI programme in the Caribbean, St. Kitts and Nevis has gained a reputation for being the most popular too. Plus, it’s consistently ranked as one of the top 5 countries for Citizenship by Investment.

A St. Kitts & Nevis passport will open the door to visa-free travel around the world,  and individuals will also be able to take advantage of attractive tax breaks and incentives the country has to offer. As is the case with other Caribbean CBI programmes, the entire process can be done in a matter of months.

The programme requires a $150,000 one time contribution or $200,000 real estate investment for a single applicant, with fees rising for families.

Turkey

Best option for real estate investment

Turkey offers the best route to citizenship via real estate investment. Whilst other programmes offer citizenship by investing in real estate, Turkey offers much greater flexibility in terms of the type and location of the property. To get a Turkish passport, single applicants can invest $250,000 in any Turkish property, which must be held for at least 3 years. What’s more, property investors in Turkey can expect to see a handsome return on investment from rental income and with capital gains, whereby buyers can sell their property after a number of years and seek profit on their initial investment.

However, new rules for 2022 state that applications must convert all foreign currency to turkish lira through the central bank to invest in property. Something to bear in mind when choosing your programme.

This passport enables holders access to 125 countries visa-free. Including countries such as the UK, EU, Canada and Australia. Also, Turkey is one of only three CBI programmes that grants citizens eligibility for the USA’s E-2 visa. This means citizens are eligible to apply for American residency through the E-2 programme, a much quicker and more cost-effective route than the main US immigration routes, such as the EB5 programme. Other programmes that grant eligibility include Grenada and Montenegro.

As you can see, there are many different pros and cons to the different citizenship by investment programmes on offer. The ‘best’ programme is entirely dependent on the individual’s personal circumstances.
